Scenic view of Acadia National Park from the Otter Cliffs.
Acadia National Park is located primarily on Mount Desert Island on the coast of Maine, USA. It is the second most visited park in the National Park system (after Yellowstone National Park). The 47,000 acre (190 km²) park features a variety of protected terrain including mountains, an ocean shoreline, woodlands, lakes, and more.
The town of Bar Harbor is located on the northeast corner of the island. Cadillac Mountain on the eastern side of the island is a famous tourist destination because it is one of the first places in the United States to see the sunrise. Miles of scenic carriage roads were originally built by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. with great sensitivity to the trees and contours of the land.
Acadia National Park also includes much of Isle au Haut, a smaller, less-populated island to the southwest of Mount Desert Island, and a portion of Schoodic Peninsula, on the mainland, to the east of Mount Desert Island.
